Daydreaming about Desert

Maybe it is because the rain has been relentless today. Maybe it is because much of my family is gathering in upstate New York for Thanksgiving. Maybe it is because of the poster still hanging at the top of the second-floor stairs in my townhouse. I am thinking of Georgia O’Keeffe today. Not of that print of Purple Petunias that I walk past every day. Nor the iconic photographs Alfred Stieglitz took of her.

Today, I dream of the desert images. The ghostly skulls and sun-bleached bones that float in front of sandy-colored mountains or a sky of pale blues and whites. I yearn, just a little, for the yellows, peaches, apricots, and oranges of her time spent in New Mexico.
