I’m grateful to have my family. Both my chosen family and my family of origin. My chosen family starts and ends with my husband, Mike Russell. Handsome, intelligent, steadfast. I don’t think I have the words just now for how thankful I am he is in my life. I thank him for his patience and for knowing just when I need that kick in the pants to sit down and write. And for so much more.

I just finished an article and handed it off to the editor. While I do have a few other pitches out, I await clarification about which idea that publisher wants and by which deadline. This kind of lull usually causes me to go on an inbox tidying frenzy, which I did earlier this week. Thanksgiving is tomorrow and the search bots gots nuthin’ but Black Friday sales promos for me today.

It’s a couple hours past when most people consider themselves to be “off duty” for the day. I’m sitting at the dining room table with my partner tackling a time-sensitive project. As the title suggests, I’m feeling tired and uninspired. At least as far as writing a blog post goes. I got up and out of the house early this morning to do my duty as a citizen. I went to the county courthouse to be available to be on a jury.

Maybe it is because the rain has been relentless today. Maybe it is because much of my family is gathering in upstate New York for Thanksgiving. Maybe it is because of the poster still hanging at the top of the second-floor stairs in my townhouse. I am thinking of Georgia O’Keeffe today. Not of that print of Purple Petunias that I walk past every day. Nor the iconic photographs Alfred Stieglitz took of her.

Seattle Writergrrls is a grassroots network of writers of all types. Our name reflects what our mission was when the group started in 1998. The earliest members, all women, came from different backgrounds with different levels of experience as writers. What we had in common was a recognition that the Internet mattered and would change the landscape of how all of us earned a living. Our goal was to collectively to support each other in figuring out how to write in what was then a brand new media: the web. I was the group’s first List Administrator, a role I held for over four years and one I reclaimed in 2010.

Narrow street, no sun in sight, the cloud-filtered light of the mid-afternoon casts shadows on the smooth whitewashed wall. The early spring air feels heavy and cool. Stagnant. I pushed open the heavy slatted wood shutter hoping for even a slight breeze. How can it be both cool and muggy?

Just a few days ago, I wrote about how discussing Pinterest incited debate at a meetup for freelance writers. Well, it seems the young company has noticed the shine of newness has worn off. Two major announcements made in the last week indicate there is a grander scheme afoot. The big question now is if the changes will be enough.

Why should we be interested in Pinterest?

I can be the queen of procrastination when I have research to do. Thank goodness there are Google Alerts to help me out when I would rather be polishing my silverware by hand with a toothbrush than actually investigating a story idea. Let’s review the array of topics found by an alert I have set up to look for “coffee Portland” once a day.

November 1 marked more than the beginning of my blogging challenge. That evening, an eclectic assortment of writers, editors, and PR specialists gathered to discuss the latest trends for travel writers seeking to build their brand online. This was no stuffy, formal presentation. Myrna Oakley, chair of the Pacific NW Travel Writers Conference, included panelists and attendees alike in a dialogue about what’s hot and what’s not in social media.

This year, I’ve been asked with increasing frequency what I know about using platforms like Kickstarter to fund book projects. Let me start by saying that I’ve not written a book (under my own name) nor have I used crowdsourcing to fund a project (yet). I am, however, a lifelong student of communications and technology with a keen interest in digital publishing.
